Waking Up: practice together, online and in person

The Waking Up Community is where people who use the Waking Up meditation app talk their practice through with each other, online and in member-run groups in 26 countries. It runs on Bettermode, and it comes with every Waking Up subscription.

Retention and expansion

Built to take people deeper into the practice

Waking Up says it designed the community to help people go further with the ideas and practices in the app, and access comes with a subscription. Members sign in with the email on their Waking Up account, get a one-time code and start by introducing themselves in the Introductions channel.

From there the conversations follow the practice into daily life: nondual meditation, mental health and book recommendations, free will and psychedelics, mindfulness in parenting, work and relationships. Some threads dig into specific ideas, such as Looking for the Looker and the Headless Way.

  • Introductions channel

Where new members start, by introducing themselves.

  • Practice discussions

Questions and experiences from beginners and from people with decades of practice.

  • Live Q&As

Teachers from the app answer members live, and the recordings are kept.

  • Local groups

90 in-person groups across 26 countries, run by members.

Events that keep working

Teachers answer live, and the recordings stay

Teachers featured in the app hold live Q&As and discussion threads in the community, and the livestream recordings live there too. Waking Up’s community page shows sessions with Richard Lang, Kelly Boys and Amanda Knox.

Members also get first access to invitations to Waking Up events, and every meetup and event hosted in the community is free.

Brand and belonging

From an Introductions channel to 90 local groups

A lot of what members post is personal. People ask how to keep a practice going after becoming a parent, or how to handle the loneliness of a path their friends don’t understand.

And it leaves the screen. By Waking Up’s count, members run 90 in-person groups across 26 countries, and the community page features a recap from a meetup in Barcelona.
