Bettermode Build vs. buy

You built a community in Claude, ChatGPT, Lovable or Grok. Now what?

It took a weekend, it works, and you're right to be excited. Here's what comes next, for the person who built it and the person who has to approve running it.

Which one did you use?

A nine-month story, a three-year cost calculator you can share, and four questions for whoever owns the budget.

Start with Saturday
ClaudeSaturday, 4:12 pm

Build a community for our customers. Login, profiles, posts and replies, in our brand colors.

Done. Your community is running. I added threaded replies and a dark mode too.

Saturday

It works

You described what you wanted and twenty minutes later there was a login page with your logo on it. By Sunday night you had profiles, threaded replies and a dark mode nobody asked for. On Monday you showed the team, and somebody said what everyone was thinking.

That feeling is real, and so is the prototype. Here's what sits between it and a community your customers use every week.

Week 2

The first requests

Customers shouldn't need another password, so you add single sign-on with your app. Your biggest accounts want private spaces. The community manager asks for email digests, because nobody returns to a forum they forget exists. Search needs to find answers, not only titles.

Each of these is a good prompt and an afternoon. Each one is also code that someone now reviews, tests and keeps working every time your app ships.

Month 2

Launch, and the parts nobody demos

The week the community goes public, a spam bot finds the sign-up form, so you build a review queue and a ban button. A member posts a screenshot with another customer's details in it and asks for it to come down tonight. Someone in Germany asks for a copy of their data, then asks you to delete it. A screen reader user can't get past the post editor.

None of it is hard on its own. It just keeps arriving, usually on a Thursday afternoon.

Request for my data, then deletion Hello, under GDPR please send me a copy of all the data you hold about me, and then delete my account.

Month 4

Other teams find it

Sales wants to see which prospects are active, inside HubSpot or Salesforce where they already work. Customer success wants an onboarding space for new accounts. Marketing asks why none of these great answers show up in Google or when buyers ask ChatGPT. Then an enterprise customer's security questionnaire comes in with a section about the community, and it lands with you.

This is good news, by the way. It means the community is working. It also means it has become a real product with real stakeholders.

Dev, Sales

Can we see which prospects are active in the community, right on the Salesforce record?

Ana, Marketing

I asked ChatGPT about our product and it quoted a Reddit thread. Why not our community answers?

Month 9

The builder gets pulled back to the roadmap

Nobody does anything wrong here. The person who built the community is good, so they get moved onto the product work that pays the bills. Dependency updates start to stack up. The community manager's requests sit in the backlog behind real product priorities.

The community still works. It just stops getting better, and members notice before anyone else does.

When building is the right call

Sometimes it is, and we'd tell you so

If the community is your product, a social app or a marketplace where members talking to each other is what customers pay for, own that code. Same if you need a data model no platform supports, or a platform team with time and a mandate to run it for years.

If the community supports your product by answering questions, onboarding customers and turning happy users into references, the weekend still paid off. You now know exactly what you want. That prototype is a great spec.

Setup is one time: SSO, your CRM connection and your domain. Hosting, security and updates stay with Bettermode.

Community management is left out of both sides. Someone has to run the community whichever way you go, so it doesn't change the comparison.
